Welcome to the website of John Cooney.  Here you can find examples of John's music, information on current and recent projects, a biography, and details of his work as a teacher, lecturer & workshop leader.

John's music has been commissioned and performed by a variety of soloists, ensembles & orchestras. He has received many awards for his work and has held a number of composer in association posts. His music is published by Composers Edition and has been recorded for NMC.

News

John is delighted to have joined Composers Edition, who will publish all his work from now on, as well as selected earlier pieces.  

Signs-Paths-Landscapes was premiered earlier this year by the Callanan Wind Ensemble & David Knotts. A link to the recording can be found on this page, and the score is available from Composers Edition.

Tendril, commissioned by the RAM as part of the 200Pieces project, was recorded by Ellen Baumring-Gledhill. A video of the piece can be seen above and the recording & score can be found here 

Current Projects

Forthcoming projects include a work for SATB choir (extract shown), a set of songs for baritone and piano,  a string quartet inspired by the paintings of Paul Klee, and a new orchestral work.
